# South Carolina: capacity and generation

An independent portfolio study developed with AI assistance. No employer data or operational outcomes.

## Source

U.S. Energy Information Administration, South Carolina Electricity Profile 2024,
Tables 4A (capacity, MW) and 5 (generation, MWh), total electric industry rows.
Published November 10, 2025; downloaded September 21, 2026.

The original workbook is retained unchanged. Its SHA-256 is in analysis.json.
The source workbook is a dated snapshot, not a live feed.

## Reproduce

Download all files in this directory, keeping the same filenames.
Install Python 3 and `openpyxl==3.1.5`, then run `python3 analyze.py`.
The script extracts 455 fuel-year rows, runs analysis.sql using Python's built-in
SQLite, checks published 2024 totals and nuclear shares, and writes energy.csv
and analysis.json. Repeated execution on the same workbook is deterministic.

## Method

Select only the Total electric industry section; exclude rows prefixed with `..`
(technology subtotals). Join capacity and generation by year and fuel, not row
position. Preserve numeric zero and negative generation, map '.'/blank to NULL,
and retain source-cell coordinates in the CSV. Missing categories remain NULL.

Shares use the published statewide total for the same year. Four displayed
sources (coal, natural gas, nuclear, solar) are a subset, not the entire mix.
Gap = generation share minus capacity share, in percentage points.
The display covers 1990–2024. Chart scales are fixed at 0–100%.

## Interpretation limits

MW measures capacity; MWh measures energy generated over a period. A comparison
of their statewide shares is not a capacity factor, efficiency, reliability,
cost, emissions, or dispatch analysis. Those require additional evidence.
EIA reports small-scale solar separately; this study uses the electric-industry
tables and does not add that separate series. Storage can have negative net
generation. Published components can differ from totals due to rounding.
Do not infer causes, forecasts, or plant-level performance from this chart.
